I quit the first day  that the lift broke down and I was stranded on it in minus-20 degree  weather.  But the event gave gave birth to a story, which developed  into a novel (self-published) called Moonlight in Vermont (sic),  dealing with the frozen corpse of a skier who became trapped on a ski  lift during an overnight blizzard.  (An accident, a suicide, or  something else?)  The book was named Best Romance by the Indie xcellence Awards of 2007. My wife, Ellie, and I also wrote The Mad River Valley, a photo history, published by Arcadia, in 2004.  I am in the rewrite stages of a third book, a novel based on the Jersey connection to the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. I have done a lot of ski writing and for a year was editor of Ski Racing International Magazine and also covered NCAA skiing for the magazine.  I still write the monthly Senior Traveler column for the Inquirer, do much traveling and travel writing.  (See www.johnhilferty.com ) Six grandchildren, the oldest is eight, all living nearby.  I love them, individually.  Collectively?  That is sometimes difficult. A nearby playground helps, and so does the removal of both of my hearing aids.
