I've lost count of the times I've walked to or from campus at night and the street is completely dark aside from moonlight - if the mugger comes from the S. University Ave side when the bulbs are burn out, it doesn't matter how well the quad buildings are lit!

It creates a glare that makes it difficult to see much of anything at night. What is needed is a system of mellow, near-ground lights, not glowing orbs so powerful that pedestrians can't see each other and astronomers can't see the stars. The thoughtlessness of the current arrangement surrenders science, sustainability, and safety to an oppressively generalized fear. Our government already encourages such cowardice. I don't want my alma mater to follow suit.

I am also curious what research has been and could be put into designing practical lighting solutions, on the part of those organizations and individuals concerned about the issue. The University Administration has an obligation to assist in this. I whole-heartedly support this petition.

I live on campus, and traveling at night is cumbersome because the light hurts my eyes, and I like be able to look at least parallel and forwards, because that a) makes sense and b) is safer, and c) more enjoyable than cranking my neck more than this school already makes me (through homework). As a contributor to the petition, I know intimately some of the details of our complaints, and feel that if they are not heeded, then the University is making a very poor decision, not only concerning the safety of the students, but also by wasting enormous amounts of electricity, enormous amounts of electricity, and detracting from the true beauty (even at night!) of our gothic campus.

Even worse is the way the concerns of the astronomy groups were completely ignored when installing the new lights. I remember in my first quarter of college. when I was briefly in an astro phy sci class, we had a lab that involved looking at the sky for specific stars. My lab group could hardly see them. I wish that the stars were not obscured in this way. The University of Chicago should be at the forefront of preventing light pollution and having better lighting strategies!

Also, as someone who occasionally sneaks around campus with somewhat illicit objectives, I have not been hampered by the new lighting. The increased UCPD patrols have proven a far greater deterrent. I miss being able to see the stars, even with the naked eye. In addition, too bright of exterior lights at night interfere with migratory patterns of birds, so we could be helping two things at once in this movement!

They basically serve no purpose other than to make the buildings look pretty at night. They don't light up the sidewalks or anything, and you can't see until you are well away from them. The lights around the library are awful, too. Sure, you can see when you're standing right next to the night bus, but what about all of the dark spots near the walkway to the library?

I am a fourth-year and I have been frustrated with the wastefulness of the lighting scheme on campus since I arrived in 2004. I sincerely hope the University recognizes this petition and resolves to make significant changes regarding lighting and electricity use in the future.

While I haven't seen the new "well-washer" lights myself, the issues of glare, over-lighting, and uplighting were certainly a problem while I was around. In 2002, I made a survey of campus lighting to highlight the potential financial savings (http://astro.uchicago.edu/~puck/lights/survey.html). Unfortunately, my PhD research took up too much of my time to pursue the issue further. I'm glad that the RAS has picked up the gauntlet again! Every corrected fixture helps reduce Chicago's pink skyglow. The University can be an example to the community of safe, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally-friendly lighting practices, while saving tens of thousands of dollars to boot.

Light can be just as blinding if not distributed correctly, thus reduction in lighting does not imply reduction in safety. Contrarily, it may mean increased safety, as noted in the petition. Furthermore, I would like to be able to use the Ryerson facilities more often and more effectively.

If the university were to admit that they had made a poor decision, and redo the campus lighting, that greatly improve my respect for the university, and make me much more comfortable about making donations to the university. As things stand, the administration often appears to say one thing, then do another.

I live 30 miles away in suburban Palatine and the skyglow from Chicago completely washes out any stars in the southwestern sky. Please do all you can to reduce light pollution. It saves money and is green at the same time. Everyone wins.

We are suspended in some seemingly random corner of the universe, on this beautiful planet, and we're rotating; as we rotate, we see the rest of the universe around us, as best as our human eyes will let us. It's awe-inspiring. Humans are so involved with their own personal lives, that they forget to take a moment to look up and appreciate this incredible 'thing' we are a part of. When you throw light pollution into the picture, humans absolutely become disconnected from this reality, and an institution like the University of Chicago should be acknowledging this!
