. | 5. In an airplane there are usually 2 to 4 washrooms at the back (tail) of the plane. When someone is using one of them, an "Occupied" light comes on so you can tell which one is available (the doors stay closed during flight whether someone is in it or not). The person in this verse really has to go and hopes there is a vacant washroom. Sure enough, one is available. A haiku reader might expect all the lights to be "on" and the feeling generated would be "desperation". I wanted the opposite feeling in this verse, "relief", as well as a reference to the "Unoccupied" theme. | | | | | | | | |
