Companies with a vested interest in the internet and cloud-based services. | Filter Nation might be a place online to download and upload photo filter treatments and share photos that have been filtered in different ways with others. | 5 | Online photo hosting services such as flickr or photobucket. | Subscription based living is about not owning any property, but rather using everything through subscription or lease. For example, not owning online music, but having subscriptions to music services. | 3 | Companies with subscription services like netflix, and rhapsody, and rental companies like car-shares. | This trend is about people who are always connected somehow to the internet, to their social networks, to the whole world. | 1 | Apple is a major player, with the iPhone allowing quality access to the internet from any location. | This is about goods and services that increase the quality of life and let someone feel like they are living luxuriously, but are, for some reason, cheaper than 'actual' luxuries. | 3 | Maybe companies like H&M, who have stylish but cheap clothing, and myabe companies like Apple will start releasing cheaper, more consumer-friendly versions of their higher priced luxury computers. |

. | 5/8/2009 15:05:25 | Colleges, education. Maybe on-line education. | 3 | I have no idea. I would say that financial loan companies may be part of this trend and On-line education if that is what it is. | This trend sounds like it is a site that either sells all kinds of filters i.e. gas, heater, air etc., or it could be news site online that only reports the true news. | 3 | If it selling I would say all of the auto parts and appliance companies, heating etc. | Sounds like a site that sells prescriptions at a cheaoer price. | 3 | CVC, Walmart, on-line pharmacies selling all kinds of medicines and vitamins etc. | Don't know, but would guess internet service that is fast. | 3 | web site browers. | selling of cheap jewlrey, and other types of items that are normally expensive. May be selling used items. | 3 | e-bay, and other sites that sell gold, jewlry. |
. | 5/8/2009 15:18:08 | Cloud University sounds like a private college, possibly in the midwest, which offers "green" classes and living conditions. It could be funded by Warren Buffet who is into windpower. Cloud University is going to happen; it could be enrolling students by the fall of 2012. Any industry which wants to be seen as "green" such as Johnson & Johnson, Toyota, Target, Walmart and Reynolds will be donating money to the university. These companies could also benefit from Cloud University by heavily recruiting graduates in 2016. | 2 | Warren Buffet, Johnson & Johnson, Toyota, Target, Reynolds, Walmart | Filter Nation could be another social networking website like Facebook or MySpace. Filter Nation is going to happen, it could be online by December of 2009. It will have sponsors, such as Expedia, Cash4Gold, or AT&T that will have ads on the pages. Filter Nation will be free to users because it will be heavily sponsored. The sponsors will benefit because social networks are widespread and heavily used. | 2 | Expedia, AT&T, Cash4Gold | Subscription Based Living sounds like a reverse mortgage company. These folks can get money and stay in their home, as long as they subscribe/commit to this company. This is happening now. This company could work closely with mortgage companies and banks such as Countrywide, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank. | 1 | Countrywide, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank. | This is a multiplayer gamimg website. Users pay to join, buy the software, and then play against others online. It boasts to be the best video site because it is "hyper" - very active. This is happening now. Companies who could sponsor this site is GameStop, Nintendo, Wii, and Xbox. | 1 | GameStop, Nintendo, Wii, and Xbox | Cheap Luxury is a furniture collection, specializing in recliners. The company makes expensive looking furniture that doesn't cost much. This company will be delivering items by February of 2010. This collection can be found at Kmart, Walmart, and Rooms to Go. | 2 | Kmart, Walmart, and Rooms to Go |
. | 5/8/2009 15:31:05 | This is about a type of college that is so easy that people can spend their time daydreaming or staring at the clouds. | 5 | Downey fabric softener (for soft fabric to provide comfort while you daydream)
Maybe cell phone companies could sell special "Cloud University" calling plans that included unlimited texting or calls to other Cloud University students so you can keep in touch while not having to pay attention in class.
| This is about filtering the water we drink because of all the unwanted substances in it, like heavy metals and most recently in the news, medications. ////filter Nation will be a large fraction of United States citizens who choose to drink clean, filtered water and who shun anything made with or containing unfiltered water. | 2 | Brita PUR Evian Deer Park Pepsi (Aquafina) Coca-Cola (Dasani)
Any food manufacturing company that uses water in a large percentage of their products, like canned foods, any kind of bottled drink or juice | This trend is about living vicariously through magazines, because there is a magazine out there for anyone and anything. For instance, you stay home and cook recipes from Gourmet Magazine, you read stories and essays in artsy literature magazines, you find some Adult Entertainment by reading Playboy, etc. | 4 | Any magazine out there! And maybe places limke Netflix and major pizza chains like Pizza Hut or Dominoes, because they will bring you food while you sit at home enjoying life from your subscriptions. | This trend is about staying connected to friends and family through use of your cellphone or other handheld computing device. You would always be connected to the Internet and have all information at your fingertips. | 1 | Apple Dell Nokia Blackberry AT&T Microsoft
Basically any cellular and computer brand/company. And also major Internet entities such as Google, Amazon, eBay, etc.
| This is about finding ways to recycle everyday items so that not only is money saved, but luxurious things can be made out of the recycled goods, which results in a lower cost. For example, making designer stationary out of recycled paper. | 2 | Wow, this would have the potential for basically any company to have a part in it. Maybe Godiva Chocolates would start wrapping their products in recycled paper, or maybe designer clothing labels would start using recycled cloths or not putting tags on clothing to save on paper. |
. | 5/8/2009 15:37:47 | I don't know; I've never heard of it before. | 3 | I don't know. | I don't know; I've never heard of it before. | 3 | I don't know. | I don't know; I've never heard of it before. | 3 | I don't know. | I think being "hyper connected" means always being tuned in all the time--by your cell phone, by Twitter, by text alerts, etc. Always knowing what is going on with your friends and family, with news, always being reachable, etc. | 1 | I'm thinking Apple with the iPhone contributes to this a lot, and Twitter. | Saving money and being thrifty; getting good quality items but at a bargain price; bargain-hunting. | 1 | eBay, Craiglist, Freecycle |
. | 5/8/2009 15:40:33 | I believe that this trend is about the open source nature of education. Many universities (such as MIT) are offering free courses and notes on various subjects. | 2 | MIT, as far as I currently know. Other university have probably already joined. | I am not familiar with this term, but would assume it's referring to individuals filtering out and being selective about the news they hear, thanks to customizable media. | 1 | I believe individuals are involved. It may spread to news organization, but people are the root cause. | Being subscribed to many services that correspond to individual needs within a person's life. | 3 | Persona help and growth companies, workout companies, nutrition companies, and the such. | Means that we are all connected, all the the time. | 1 | Blackberry, internet companies, Apple .... all technology makers. | Finding the best deal on expensive things, whether through coupons, deals, or auctions. | 2 | Expedia, eBay, deal finding sites, and any site that guides individuals to deals and such. |

. | 5/8/2009 16:41:00 | I really don't know so my guess is that's an online university which is a present trend that will grow with time. You will be able to take all classes online and get a degree with that. All companies who need some employees to get more classes towards promotion without having them miss work. They would be able to attend classes during the time they were home. | 2 | Insurance Companies, hospitals, | Environmental and making the world "green" by limiting use of chemicals. We may be heading towards that trend and it will become very popular in the next five years. | 3 | Landscapers, gasoline companies, pesticide producers | Not sure what that could be unless it's customized life style with homes and diet being customized to the individuals. Not to come for possible another 10 years. | 4 | Home builders, Restaurants, clothing manufacturers | I suspect this is not a real trend and have no idea what it could be if it were. | 5 | not sure | Hotels that offer special deals where luxury spas might be part of the package at a reduced price possibly because of certain times of the month or year. I suspect that is happening now during the economy crunch to encourage people to enjoy activities at affordable prices. | 2 | hotels, resorts, cruises, restaurants |
. | 5/8/2009 17:36:21 | Sharing information with others based on one's qualifications online to improve education for others. This goes beyond just the usual reading of information but would require the donation of time and knowledge to help others improve their education in the desired field. | 2 | Walmart usually likes to be in on great ideas. Procter & Gamble, Pepsi, the automakers if they still are up and running, numerous pharmaceutical companies, and health institutions. | I am guessing that you are speaking about the need or desire to keep unwanted information out of our lives. More and more people are spurning what they consider junk Mail, spam, and other annoying information. | 1 | companies such as Norton's, Trend, Spy Sweeper, any email service such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc. | Companies, websites, want commitment to provide services/information. Including Internet Providers, Energy Companies, Computer Manufacturers, and others. | 2 | Google, Microsoft, Ebay, Hollywood, government as the world moves toward a internet, computer based society. | Providing entertainment, recreation at affordable prices. After all if prices are not reduced most people will be unable to enjoy such things. | 3 | Marriott, Carnival, Holiday Inn, Timeshares, the airlines, Enterprise, etc. |
. | 5/8/2009 21:04:50 | I think the Cloud University trend is about getting the public to wear their favorite college team's sweatshirts and other items. Everyone tends to get hyped up about their local sports, what better way to exploit the use of college sports team clothing? | 1 | Wal-Mart has been providing more and more college related clothing and other items to support local college teams. Other that will probably follow, if not already doing so, will be K-Mart, Shop-ko and Target. | Filter Nation is probably a trend to get more of the public to buy water filter systems instead of buying bottled water. Trying to promote the green way of drinking. Everyone is going green, or should be. Filtering water would be one simple way to go green. | 3 | Brita will definitely be involved in this trend. You will see stores like Wal-Mart, to even department stores like JC Penny's involved in promoting Filter Nation. | Subscription Based Living is probably the trend where people start to buy products from home. Either online, or from catalogs. In the last few years, more people have started to purchase Christmas presents on Black Friday at home than in stores. Every year more companies are noticing this trend and have began doing online promotions for black friday. | 1 | Sears/Kmart definitely cashed in on Subscription Based Living last Black Friday. So did Wal-Mart and many electronic stores. Companies have realized shoppers don't want to have to wait in line, so each promotes a limited time sale online for a limited amount of items until all items are sold. | Hyper Connected is the trend where you can be up to date on everyone and everything any second of the day from any place in the world. Different applications like Twitter have developed a way you can stay connected to the world at an instant from your mobile phone or even other electronic devices. | 1 | Iphone with Cingular is definitely taking part of the Hyper Connected Trend. MSN even has ways to get current headlines texted to your phone, as well as stocks and weather. Major companies, from News Channels to Magazines, can keep you up to date in an instant using Twitter. | Cheap Luxury is the trend that promotes using knock off brands that are practically identical to major brands. People cannot always afford the best, but if you use something cheaper that looks similar, who can tell? | 1 | Iclone is a brand that is identical to Iphone. Sony, Toshiba and other electronic brands compete all the time to have the products that are hyped up for a cheaper price under a different name. Right now most phone companies are creating Touch Screen phones so everyone can afford one with their company. Companies like T-Mobile don't want to lose their consumers to companies like Verizon for having better phones, so why not have a knock-off brand everyone will love? |
. | 5/8/2009 21:16:17 | This trend is a slang term for the name of a college that young adults across America attend. It is called Cloud University because college has become such a popular thing to do after high school that anyone can easily earn a degree, some can even do it with their heads in the clouds. Therefore, they go to Cloud University. | 3 | Any college apparel or attire stores. | We live in a nation where we have the choice to filter any information we want: television channels, emails, applications, messages, etc... So our nation has become a Filter Nation. | 2 | Any cable companies that offer channel filtering (Comcast, verizon), or email networks like Yahoo!, Google, Hotmail, etc... | This is a trend that refers to people getting everything they need through subscriptions: magazines, food, haircare products, etc... | 4 | Anything that is being sold online or on the shopping network channel QVC. | This is a trend that refers to the idea that America is a Hyper Connected Nation. At any given point, we have access to communicate in many ways: telephone, messaging, email. We are always connected to the world somehow. | 1 | Cell Phone companies: AT&T, Verizon, I-Phone, etc... | This is a trend that refers to stores or merchandise that looks expensive or was expensive but is purchased at a cheap price. | 2 | T.J. Maxx, Ross, Wal-Mart, Target. |

. | 5/8/2009 21:42:23 | I really don't know, but I assume it is taking the general concept of cloud computing and wikis and such and appying it to some sort of open source education concept. I've run into instances of people talking about things like this, but I don't know how much of it is talk and how much of it is actually being experimented with in a serious way. | 3 | I have no idea. | No clue. My best guess would be... nope. I don't have a guess. It kind of sounds like an oil change chain, but I'm sure it's some loftier idea than that. | 4 | I can't begin to guess. It sounds to me like it would be a standalone brand from a single company, not a trend. | Again, I've not heard of it. Perhaps it's a describing trend where people would subscribe to a particular lifestyle and all the amenities that come with it. Like joining a club that ensures you some particular standard, style and quality of living.
In a way, people who own property clustered around theme parks like Disney are subscribing to a particular kind of living. In that case it's a surreal, sanitized community where nothing bad ever happens. I can imagine that becoming a new way for people to drop out of the more disturbing real world. Yuppie communes of the future, maybe? | 2 | If it's what I'm guessing above, I can imagine a number of companies or organizations that would be a part of something like that. Disney and the LDS church spring to mind. Organizations of common interest like the NRA or AARP.
I could see big healthcare networks like Kaiser offering something like this related to healthy lifestyles. The other guesses I have are more vague and less tied to company names, but I could picture other religious groups, major resorts, golf courses or any other clusters of interest being turned into offers like this. I might be way off on what this concept is really about, but that's what it sounds like to me. | I think this is a trend that is already happening. I think it is the trend toward people being interactively connected to each other and to information in almost all aspects of their lives, and on a more psychological level the growing trend for people to feel that they need to be have on demand connectivity to large remote groups of other people and need to be instantly informed and constantly updated on things that are going on.
I suppose it really started with the telephone. Computer networks and later, the internet moved it a giant step forward. Webservers and cell phones added a whole new dimensions and ratcheted up peoples desire for connectivity. The new generation of portable devices with network access, combined with things like Twitter and RSS and social networks have fueled it along.
There is now a generation that can't imagine living without any of theses things, so the demand for this kind of connectivity is likely here to stay. How far it will go is difficult to predict, but I think people have always flock toward things that offer them escape and this trend could take that to extremes. | 1 | This list could go on forever.
- Sony, Apple, Nokia, Nintendo, and just about every other company that makes portable consumer electronics - Google, Microsoft, Yahoo if they survive, and thousands of other long and short-lived development companies - Time/Warner, NewsCorp, CNN, Fox, and every other major content provider - Verizon, Vodafone, and every other mobile telecommunications and cable network provider - All the major banks and credit card companies
I'm sure a lot of retail brands will try to jump on this bandwagon, but I'd estimate that fewer than half of them will do it well.
I also imagine that governments and politicians and celebrities will start creating their own brands and hyping their own agendas on this wave.
This trend has already exploded into just about every sector in the past 12 months. It might be easier at this point to come up with a list of companies and brands that probably won't be a part of it.
| It sounds like a way to keep people buying things that they don't really need in difficult economic times. I would think it has to do with the discounting of brand name goods and services that ordinarily aren't discounted. A way make thrifty cool.
I'm an American living in Europe and I've seen that trend emerge here in the past decade. There are a number of good examples of discount stores that have rebranded themselves to appeal to the upper middle class. Aldi and H&M are good examples. In the US, companies like Costco have attracted a surprisingly affluent customer base who isn't ashamed to be shopping for bargains there.
The fashion industry has been doing this for some time. Most of the popular brands have both high end and middle priced lines, and some even have deeply discounted low end lines.
It's just a guess, but I would imagine that women are driving this trend forward. | 1 | Hotels and resorts. Names like Marriott, Intercontinental and Hyatt.
Every major fashion brand.
Large department stores like Macy's, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom.
I think whole magazines will spring up around this concept.
I also think we will see an increasing number of online stores spring up or spin off sections dedicated to these kinds of sales.
Household furnishing and fixture and appliance companies are likely to participate.
I think that storefront sellers on eBay and Amazon will probably take advantage of the trend.
I'm not naming particular brands, because like the hyperconnectivity trend there are just too many to name. Retailers and retail brands are struggling now. I think most except for ultra-elite will jump on this bandwagon out of necessity.
