5/8/2009 15:18:08Cloud University sounds like a private college, possibly in the midwest, which offers "green" classes and living conditions. It could be funded by Warren Buffet who is into windpower. Cloud University is going to happen; it could be enrolling students by the fall of 2012. Any industry which wants to be seen as "green" such as Johnson & Johnson, Toyota, Target, Walmart and Reynolds will be donating money to the university. These companies could also benefit from Cloud University by heavily recruiting graduates in 2016.2Warren Buffet, Johnson & Johnson, Toyota, Target, Reynolds, WalmartFilter Nation could be another social networking website like Facebook or MySpace. 5/8/2009 21:04:50I think the Cloud University trend is about getting the public to wear their favorite college team's sweatshirts and other items. Everyone tends to get hyped up about their local sports, what better way to exploit the use of college sports team clothing?1Wal-Mart has been providing more and more college related clothing and other items to support local college teams. Other that will probably follow, if not already doing so, will be K-Mart, Shop-ko and Target.Filter Nation is probably a trend to get more of the public to buy water filter systems instead of buying bottled water. Trying to promote the green way of drinking. Everyone is going green, or should be. Filtering water would be one simple way to go green.3Brita will definitely be involved in this trend. You will see stores like Wal-Mart, to even department stores like JC Penny's involved in promoting Filter Nation.Subscription Based Living is probably the trend where people start to buy products from home. Either online, or from catalogs. In the last few years, more people have started to purchase Christmas presents on Black Friday at home than in stores. Every year more companies are noticing this trend and have began doing online promotions for black friday.1Sears/Kmart definitely cashed in on Subscription Based Living last Black Friday. So did Wal-Mart and many electronic stores. Companies have realized shoppers don't want to have to wait in line, so each promotes a limited time sale online for a limited amount of items until all items are sold.Hyper Connected is the trend where you can be up to date on everyone and everything any second of the day from any place in the world. Different applications like Twitter have developed a way you can stay connected to the world at an instant from your mobile phone or even other electronic devices.1Iphone with Cingular is definitely taking part of the Hyper Connected Trend. MSN even has ways to get current headlines texted to your phone, as well as stocks and weather. Major companies, from News Channels to Magazines, can keep you up to date in an instant using Twitter. Cheap Luxury is the trend that promotes using knock off brands that are practically identical to major brands. People cannot always afford the best, but if you use something cheaper that looks similar, who can tell?1Iclone is a brand that is identical to Iphone. Sony, Toshiba and other electronic brands compete all the time to have the products that are hyped up for a cheaper price under a different name. Right now most phone companies are creating Touch Screen phones so everyone can afford one with their company. Companies like T-Mobile don't want to lose their consumers to companies like Verizon for having better phones, so why not have a knock-off brand everyone will love?

5/8/2009 21:16:17This trend is a slang term for the name of a college that young adults across America attend. It is called Cloud University because college has become such a popular thing to do after high school that anyone can easily earn a degree, some can even do it with their heads in the clouds. Therefore, they go to Cloud University.3Any college apparel or attire stores. We live in a nation where we have the choice to filter any information we want: television channels, emails, applications, messages, etc... 5/8/2009 21:42:23I really don't know, but I assume it is taking the general concept of cloud computing and wikis and such and appying it to some sort of open source education concept. I've run into instances of people talking about things like this, but I don't know how much of it is talk and how much of it is actually being experimented with in a serious way. 3I have no idea.No clue. My best guess would be... nope. I don't have a guess. It kind of sounds like an oil change chain, but I'm sure it's some loftier idea than that.4I can't begin to guess. It sounds to me like it would be a standalone brand from a single company, not a trend.Again, I've not heard of it. Perhaps it's a describing trend where people would subscribe to a particular lifestyle and all the amenities that come with it. Like joining a club that ensures you some particular standard, style and quality of living.

In a way, people who own property clustered around theme parks like Disney are subscribing to a particular kind of living. In that case it's a surreal, sanitized community where nothing bad ever happens. I can imagine that becoming a new way for people to drop out of the more disturbing real world. Yuppie communes of the future, maybe?
2If it's what I'm guessing above, I can imagine a number of companies or organizations that would be a part of something like that. Disney and the LDS church spring to mind. Organizations of common interest like the NRA or AARP.

I could see big healthcare networks like Kaiser offering something like this related to healthy lifestyles. The other guesses I have are more vague and less tied to company names, but I could picture other religious groups, major resorts, golf courses or any other clusters of interest being turned into offers like this. I might be way off on what this concept is really about, but that's what it sounds like to me.
I think this is a trend that is already happening. I think it is the trend toward people being interactively connected to each other and to information in almost all aspects of their lives, and on a more psychological level the growing trend for people to feel that they need to be have on demand connectivity to large remote groups of other people and need to be instantly informed and constantly updated on things that are going on.

I suppose it really started with the telephone. Computer networks and later, the internet moved it a giant step forward. Webservers and cell phones added a whole new dimensions and ratcheted up peoples desire for connectivity. The new generation of portable devices with network access, combined with things like Twitter and RSS and social networks have fueled it along.

There is now a generation that can't imagine living without any of theses things, so the demand for this kind of connectivity is likely here to stay. How far it will go is difficult to predict, but I think people have always flock toward things that offer them escape and this trend could take that to extremes.
1This list could go on forever.

- Sony, Apple, Nokia, Nintendo, and just about every other company that makes portable consumer electronics
- Google, Microsoft, Yahoo if they survive, and thousands of other long and short-lived development companies
- Time/Warner, NewsCorp, CNN, Fox, and every other major content provider
- Verizon, Vodafone, and every other mobile telecommunications and cable network provider
- All the major banks and credit card companies

I'm sure a lot of retail brands will try to jump on this bandwagon, but I'd estimate that fewer than half of them will do it well.

I also imagine that governments and politicians and celebrities will start creating their own brands and hyping their own agendas on this wave.

This trend has already exploded into just about every sector in the past 12 months. It might be easier at this point to come up with a list of companies and brands that probably won't be a part of it.
It sounds like a way to keep people buying things that they don't really need in difficult economic times. I would think it has to do with the discounting of brand name goods and services that ordinarily aren't discounted. A way make thrifty cool.

I'm an American living in Europe and I've seen that trend emerge here in the past decade. There are a number of good examples of discount stores that have rebranded themselves to appeal to the upper middle class. Aldi and H&M are good examples. In the US, companies like Costco have attracted a surprisingly affluent customer base who isn't ashamed to be shopping for bargains there.

The fashion industry has been doing this for some time. Most of the popular brands have both high end and middle priced lines, and some even have deeply discounted low end lines.

It's just a guess, but I would imagine that women are driving this trend forward.
1Hotels and resorts. Names like Marriott, Intercontinental and Hyatt.

Every major fashion brand.

Large department stores like Macy's, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom.

I think whole magazines will spring up around this concept.

I also think we will see an increasing number of online stores spring up or spin off sections dedicated to these kinds of sales.

Household furnishing and fixture and appliance companies are likely to participate.

I think that storefront sellers on eBay and Amazon will probably take advantage of the trend.

I'm not naming particular brands, because like the hyperconnectivity trend there are just too many to name. Retailers and retail brands are struggling now. I think most except for ultra-elite will jump on this bandwagon out of necessity.

This paper proposes a new univariate method to decompose a time series into a trend, a cyclical and a seasonal component: the Trend-Cycle filter (TC filter) and its extension, the Trend-Cycle-Season filter (TCS filter). They can be regarded as extensions of the Hodrick-Prescott filter (HP filter). In particular, the stochastic model of the HP filter is extended by explicit models for the cyclical and the seasonal component. The introduction of a stochastic cycle improves the filter in three respects: first, trend and cyclical components are more consistent with the underlying theoretical model of the filter. Second, the end-of- sample reliability of the trend estimates and the cyclical component is improved compared to the HP filter since the pro-cyclical bias in end- of-sample trend estimates is virtually removed. Finally, structural breaks in the original time series can be easily accounted for.
3Apart from the FCTCWhole Living and its wholly-owned subsidiary The Brain Garden, has reported revenues of $1.8 million for the second quarter of 2002, compared to $1.4 million earned during the first quarter of the year.

The company said the growth was a direct result of increased demand for their premier product Pulse.

During the second quarter, Whole Living expanded global operations in Australia and Canada, and recently announced plans to enter Europe. Domestic sales increased over 150 per cent, according to the company, which became profitable in May for the first time in its history.

The acquisition of Vestrio was completed in late June, and Whole Living said that it saw immediate benefits during July.

"In this quarter we crossed some major milestones and are on track with the vision management has laid out for this company," said Ron Williams, president of Whole Living, "but as the saying goes, 'you ain't seen nothing yet.' With our acquisition of Vestrio we will continue to set records and increase shareholder value."

Whole Living produces and markets wholefoods to consumers throughout the US, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

PACKAGING WORLD
Setting a Brand Apart Through
Effective Sustainable Packaging
By Santosh Padki, vice president of marketing and Business Development, Center for Packagin

Sunacle Bucks The Trend

Let's take a look at the Oracle acquisition of Sun. Big news, that came out of nowhere after IBM tried to do the same. Big bucks for sure ($5.6B). But does it make sense?

Years ago, I picked up two slogan buttons- you know the kind that vendors hand out at tradeshows.

"Hardware makes software happen".

"Software makes hardware useful".

I picked these buttons up at a time when minicomputers and mainframes were king, and vertical integration was the norm. Since then, a significant amount of hardware and software commoditization has taken place, with these linked through vendor agnostic operating systems such as Windows or Linux.

Take the telecom industry. Telecom used to be a hardware centric vertically integrated world. With the exception of Cisco that thinks that apps should be vertically integrated with network hardware, the industry at-large is rapidly evolving towards telecom as a set of Web-Services-enable software applications running on commercial off-the-shelf servers. This eliminates the network (hardware) from becoming the bottleneck in application innovation, for example, when integrating communications into business applications and processes.

So why did Oracle buy Sun (Sunacle)? Beats me. My prediction- they will learn an expensive lesson, integrate the good stuff and end up divesting the hardware business.
3How are commercial television and radio stations reaching out to
"hyper-connected kids" -- i.e. teens and pre-teens who use their cell
phones to IM each other all the time... have stopped listening to the
radio... and who don't understand a world where they can't skip
commercials, etc.

I am trying to make a case that there are new emerging groups of media
consumers, and that broadcasters need to "think outside the box"
(sorry) to
reach them more effectively.

So -- I need you to find three or four case studies (from anywhere in
the world) where radio and TV stations have tried to reach the above
group of people. And a sense of how the results have been (i.e. what
have they learned from their experience?)

It's okay if one of these attempts/case studies shows a station or
network which failed dismally -- in fact, that's often more
instructive. It's important to know WHY it failed or WHY it succeeded,
though.

These case studies should, IF POSSIBLE, be of commercial/private
broadcasters -- the audience for this research will be private
broadcasters and their advertisers.

Deadline for this is tight: I need the info by Saturday (tomorrow) at
noon Pacific time.
MOSCOW — Plunging automotive sales have brought domestic auto giants to their knees, and even foreign majors are feeling the pinch.

New car sales in Russia declined 40 percent overall in the first quarter, but a few luxury brands are bucking the trend thanks to competitive prices and new models.

Four brands posted year-on-year sales increases in the first quarter, and three of them rank high in the premium car segment: Hummer, Infiniti and Cadillac.

General Motors is continuing its desperate search for a buyer for Hummer after the brand’s worldwide sales dropped 76 percent year on year in March. In Russia, however, sales couldn’t be better, growing 89 percent in the same month.

While Cadillac and Infiniti boasted first-quarter sales growth of more than 50 percent year on year, other luxury brands felt the pinch throughout the broader market.

Overall new car sales in Russia plummeted 47 percent in March and 40 percent first quarter, and sales for other high-end cars tumbled in turn.

Lexus sales plummeted 74 percent first quarter; Mercedes-Benz sales fell 57 percent; and Porsche saw a 45 percent drop.
3Whether it be a million dollar sports car, a rare sparkling gem, or a European vacation, luxury can still be afforded by the elite.

In 2007, the luxury industry was estimated to be a $150-billion dollar business. Today, research shows, a growing demand for luxury items has left it virtually untouched by the global financial slide.

"The current downturn is not affecting it. Gucci group is up. Times are still good for the luxury brand," said management consultant Dr. Jem Bendell.

Recent studies show however, that with the luxury industry expanding and becoming more accessible to a wider audience including China, luxury brands have had to appeal to another level apart from its traditional exclusive market.

5/9/2009 1:40:28Cloud University is open access education, typified right now by MIT's freely available learning materials. I think it is a great use of the Internet to bring extremely high quality education to everyone, no matter where they are or what their background is. I personally have worked on MIT material to learn Chinese. Wonderful stuff. 1Universities, such as MIT, open source developers... I don't see this as a 'company' project.I have not heard anything about this trend, and Google does not bring up any relevant material.5I cannot answer this question honestly because of the lack of information available on the subject.Although I am not sure about the Living part of this title, more and more services are being offered on the Web on a subscription basis - security, photo services, applications... Would the idea be that instead of buying outright, you can modulate expenses for things like security services or business applications through a pay-per-month or per-year system? If so, I am not sure to what extent I would participate. I do use some subscription-based services already, such as Rapidshare, but it is rare. I prefer to buy my applications outright.3Microsoft, Google, security services such as McAfee, photo services such as Shutterstock...From what I've been able to ascertain, HyperConnected is the trend towards more and more levels of connectivity in the global information workforce. Nortel has published a study on it: "Here's the essence of what we found -- enterprises around the world are facing an exploding "culture of connectivity." Not only is 16% of the global information workforce already "Hyperconnected," more significantly, another 36% will be joining them soon! This evolution towards increasing levels of connectivity will have a profound impact on enterprises, creating challenges in managing these new tools of connectivity while providing information securely and reliably, and ensuring that this connectivity is productive."

I think that we are in a culture of increasing connectivity, with profound effects on how we do things and the speed we do them at. It is a fascinating subject to think about, and will definitely shape our futures.

1Everyone. I mean that seriously. We will all eventually be affected by this trend and need to plan for it and grow with it. If I understand this correctly, 'cheap luxury' was about middle-class consumers buying the lower-end goods produced by luxury, high-status companies. The luxury companies wanted to attract the money the middle-class had, or thought they had, or wanted to pretend they had... Given the current economic climate, I think that this is over and done with in the form it took up to Christmas of 2008. The present recession/depression will not lead to a re-birth of luxury spending, in my opinion, for at least another 10 years. It's been made quite clear to all of us in the developed world that we 'lived too well too long'.4I believe that brands and companies had better avoid anything to do with the 'cheap luxury' movement that typified consumer spending from 2000 to 2008. Not a good idea to be associated with it.

5/9/2009 3:58:51Hum, I don't have any idea what this means. If I had to make a guess this would be some kind of new University in the sky? I don't think this is possible and it would be rather hard to get in and out of. Maybe you are thinking this could be a clothing line? C.U.?5Well I don't realy think this marketing name would fly... It's a bit too fluffy. It kind of makes me think of something my friend chuck would like. Hes a homosexual male about 30 years old. Maybe for a girls clothing line it would work soo maybe nike, rebox, addida. I think of sports when I think of University wear. This kind of reminds me of what is happening to our media right now. We are liveing in a filter nation. People decided to filter content on the radio , then the TV, now the internet.1I would imagine cable companies and DSL providers, Yahoo, Comcast, Cox. This to me means liveing off subscriptions. We are starting to do this now. We have subscriptions which allow us to get the magazines, newspapers, online newsletters, even our movies. You can also get a subscription to diet food so your food comes right to your door each month.1nutrasystem, magazines, itunes, netflix.I would say overly connected all the time to internet and media. TV, internet, mobile phone use.1At&t, facebook, twitter, widget, itunes, verizon, 3g networks.Saving money while not saving money I guess. Might be something that could help the economy. I think people have been living in luxury for too long on credit. It's hard to switch everyone into penny pincher mode. 5/9/2009 19:49:37Cloud University is a trend in which, rather than attending a national institution, students & scholars are able to receive a recognized education using means such as streaming sites (youtube, etc) or mass-communication sites (Myspace, etc). This trend is starting to happen, but probably won't be utilized for a few years.2Youtube, Veoh, Myspace, Facebook, and other related sites.Filter Nation is a trend in which people can use search engines to filter their interests about politics so that they only view opinions that are similar to theirs. This is already happening.1Google, Yahoo, MSN, Lycos, and other popular search engines.Subscription Based Living refers to people who use companies which, monthly, send them groceries, clothes, appliances and other supplies which they request. The subscribers pay for both the subscription service as well as the items delivered. Most people use magazines to occasionally purchase things, but as the internet intergrates itself more into people's lives and technology advances, in a decade or more it might become popular rather than going out to shop.4Just about every company that sells products and can make a profit by these means will capitalize off of Subscription Based Living.
