9/9/2009 7:22:49HomeInternetCo-WorkerPhoneI was checking a bulletin board at Serenity Sisters online and saw that a plane had hit the towers. I turned on the TV just as the 2nd plane hit. I immediately called my boss. 1 hour later at school -- we had prayer. Someone mentioned while praying on how to handle retaliation and I think that is when it truly hit me what had happened, what might happen.

It was horrific and surreal. I had to go to school and by mid day most of the children were picked up by their parents. All those who worked in skyscrapers in Seattle were sent home.

9/9/2009 7:41:29WorkCo-WorkerCo-WorkerVerbal ChatThe sky was so blue it was such a beautiful day I thought this can't be happening. I could see the NY skyline from our town and the twin towers that I looked at every day were no longer there to see.

9/9/2009 7:42:27HomeSpouse/Significant OtherSpouse/Significant OtherPhoneA friend's daughter worked in the Towers. She was late going to work because she had gone to see a Janet Jackson concert the night before, so she got a call not to come in before she even left home. The interesting part of this story comes 5 years later when a reporter found a canceled check that she had saved, but it had been in the very back of her desk drawer. In all the rubble, that check had someone been spared and had all the writing on it and clearly had her name and address and phone number. The reporter was doing a "paper chase" on these found items and wanted to know if it had any meaning to her. It turns out it was the check that she had to pay to be sworn into the New York Bar after passing her Bar Exam and it was the final thing she had to do to finally say she was a lawyer. It had a lot of meaning to her and she was very glad to get it back admidst all the rubble that could have destroyed it!

9/9/2009 7:43:19OtherTelevisionSpouse/Significant OtherVerbal ChatI was sitting on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York fishing and on vacation. The only channel we got on our tv in the cabin we rented was CBC out of Canada. We went into the nearest town about 15 miles away about 1pm for lunch so we were a good 5 hours learning of the attacks after they happened.Because of the 4 day delay in getting air traffic back to normal I was stuck up in Niagara Falls, NY where we flew in to for vacation for almost a week. Flying that close to after the attacks was a very harrowing experience.

.

9/9/2009 7:43:20WorkTelevisionCo-WorkerOtherWe shared person to person at school and then had to talk to our students about it.The tragedy was just beginning as I walked into school that morning. The TV was already on in our teachers' lounge. We watched the TV as the World Trade Center came down. We cried & hugged one another as we listened to the news. Then we had to go to class and be with our students. We did a lot of talking about tragedy during the next few weeks.

.

9/9/2009 7:43:25WorkTelevisionSpouse/Significant OtherPhoneI remember watching the live coverage as the 2nd plane crashed into the WTC. We couldn't believe this was happening. The news reports were unsure after the 1st plane what was going on. We heard that a small plane (like a Cessna) had crashed into the WTC, but after watching the 2nd plane go in, we knew that we were under attack. The most vivid memory is how everyone froze for a few days after that whenever they heard a jet overhead...we never knew if we might be next. Very scary times...

9/9/2009 7:43:30HomeRadioSpouse/Significant OtherVerbal ChatAfter I heard the news on the radio about the first plane, I got up and turned on the TV. I was still hoping that it had been an accident. But then as I watched, the next plane hit. I knew that it was more than an accident. I remember going into school that morning and encountering people who had not yet heard the news. There was a wave of sadness and fear. Being on the other side of the country was surreal. We watched on television, but we also watched our own skies. The worst thing about terror, is not the attack but the fear and distrust it leaves for years to come.

9/9/2009 7:49:45OtherTelevisionSpouse/Significant OtherPhoneI was at the YMCA.My husband is a pilot and was flying to Washington, DC the morning of the 11th. He was quickly redirected back to our home city, Charlotte, NC. Of course, when I heard the news on the television, I called him. He was safe so I allowed myself to take a deep breath.

That night or the night of the 12th, he woke me up out of bed and asked me to join him outside. Groggy me obliged. We, my children included, sat down on the steps and looked up into the sky. He told us we were watching history. This was the first time in our lives, there were no planes in the sky. The federal government had stopped ALL airplanes from flying. I will never forget that night.

I also remember all of the American flags flying and the bumper stickers on the back of vehicles. The impact on me was great. I loved the patriotism and the love shown for our country. I would have liked to see that continue.

9/9/2009 7:50:38WorkChildCo-WorkerVerbal ChatYou're not going to believe how I heard about the events of this horrible day. You see, I don't listen to the radio or watch TV in the morning. I just drove to school and hurried into my classroom to drop my stuff off because I had morning playground duty. While I was supervising the kids, one of my third grade students came running up to me and said, "Did you hear about the towers?" Of course, I was clueless and said "What towers?". He proceeded to describe the Twin Towers and what happened in his best ability. At first I didn't believe him and thought he was exaggerating and not telling the truth. Then a whole bunch of other kids started to come up and describe what they had seen on the news and heard from their parents. I couldn't believe that I had heard nothing until that moment. One of my other teacher friends came out to the playground and we exchanged solemn words of disbelief. We all wished that school could be cancelled and that everyone could go home and be with their families. I do remember many parents keeping their kids home from school that day. And to top it off, September 11th is my birthday. I turned 40 years old that day. I will never ever forget the men, women, and children who were lost that day and all their families and friends who still grieve.

I told her you have lived through things like this...like World War II. The US will recover!I know watching the news networks, CNN and Fox became a frequent passtime. In fact, I watched it so much it really caused me to be depressed. It was hard to "get out of bed" wondering "what was going to happen to my town." I live very close to the international headquarters of Federal Express. I couldn't get to my daughter at the University of TN and she couldn't get home. Planes were constantly flying around Knoxville and Oak Ridge because of the Nuclear reactors. One weekend, she finally "took off to the mountains." She passed the Knoxville airport. 9/9/2009 7:54:14OtherTelevisionAquaintanceVerbal ChatI was a junior in college at Ohio Northern University. I had just walked back to my apartment from a 9:00am Physics class and flipped on the TV--and there it was. I went to my next class at 11:00 and we jointly agreed with our professor that it was best to cancel class.I was worried and frightened because I could not get in touch with my father, who was supposed to be flying back into the U.S. that day from a business trip to Canada. All the cell phone networks were tied up. Luckily, was fine. He had to rent a car and drive from Toronto back to Cleveland, Ohio.

.

9/9/2009 7:55:18WorkCo-WorkerStudentVerbal ChatIt was my first year teaching. The media specialist was working on my TV that morning and flipping the channels to see if it was working. She saw it on breaking news and quickly turned off the TV. Other teachers and I did not really find out what was going on until much later when we went to lunch or checked our email during our planning times.

.

9/9/2009 7:55:18CarRadioCo-WorkerVerbal ChatI was going into school that day when I heard the news. As soon as I walked in all the teachers started gathering and trying to figure out what was going on. We instantly turned on the television and saw Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer interrupting regular programing to update us on the situation. We were shocked and simply stared at the screen when we saw the 2nd plane hit the towers.

By then students had arrived to their first hour classes. We all had televisions on at the point and watched as a group. Teaching middle school students, we felt it was appropriate to watch the news coverage. The towers fell and instantly so did our hearts as we knew hundreds of people met their demise in that incident.

Our students asked if we could pray even though we were a public school, and I agreed. We prayed for our country and that justice would prevail to discover why someone would do such a terrible thing.

Internet usage was not as common then, so I would update the CNN website every few seconds to make sure we had the most current information. It was strange to know that there would be no waiting for answers when the Internet could inform us instantly of information.

We eventually turned off the news and had to focus on school, but no one really did. It was if timed stopped altogether.

I remember I had to be strong for my children but I was at a loss on how to explain what was going on and what had happened. 9/9/2009 8:40:32WorkOtherCo-WorkerVerbal ChatWe could see the towers from the windows in our school. I heard screaming in the hallway from the teachers who had a direct view of downtown. When a colleague covered my class, I went out into the hallway where I saw both towers still standing, just before the second plane hit.Horrifying, terrifying. Cell phone service was out so it was quite a while until I was able to be in touch with my family to make sure they were okay. The drive home became, for me, a race to get ahead of the dust cloud that was moving across the city. I have still not been able to return to ground zero.

9/9/2009 9:15:04OtherSpouse/Significant OtherOtherPhoneI was at the Grocery Store.

I called my Dad.
We live in Omaha and we have a special air force base here that houses underground buildings and protective spaces for the government. It was designed during the Cold War. I felt especially unsafe, wondering if that was also going to be a target. I went to my children's daycare and school and picked them up and took them home. It seemed important to me to have the people I love close and safe.
Later we watched as Air Force One brought President Bush here to the Offutt Air Force Base. It was a strange sight seeing the only plane all day in the sky fly right over our house.
I remember the great fear, mixed with sadness and anger and more fear. It was a horrific few days.

I remember being woken up around 3:30pm on that same day (it was 09/11) with a friend telling me to turn on the television.

When I got to work, the mood was somber since so many of those who died were in public safety, as we were. The security around our headquarters was tightened up and rumors flew about possible further attacks.

For years I wore a P.O.W. bracelet for Carlos Lillo, a Firefighter/Paramedic who was killed. I still have that bracelet at home.

No one called our classroom phones from the office nor did anyone come to tell us anything until almost 20 minutes after this "exodus" began. By that time, the rest of the adults had all found out. With no TV, radio or computers tuned to news, we were clueless but knew something serious was occurring. One teacher finally made a call to her parents, whose father happened to work for USAIRWAYS. We then heard of the chaos that was going on both in New York and in the skies over Pittsburgh. Finally the guidance counselor came to our room to tell the teachers what was happening. We were told to tell the students nothing, but that is difficult when they saw over half of their classmates being called to the office to go home. 9/9/2009 14:32:27WorkCo-WorkerCo-WorkerVerbal ChatBeing in PA and not that far from Shanksville many of our parents hurried to school to get their children. My one stand out memory is of a conversation between 2 of my kindertgarteners - one who obviously had seen TV and one who just as obviously had not. The boy who had not asked what everyone of upset about and the other child answered that some men had knocked down some buildings with an airplane. The first child asked, very innocently, "did they build the building?" "no" was the reply. He then said, "didn't anyone tell them you can't knock down a building you didn't build?" That is one of the cardinal rules in our Kindergarten - if only life was this simple. Out of the mouths of babes. I lost a friend on the flight out of Boston, although it was some time before I knew that. My class will be wearing red, white and blue on Friday. God Bless America!

Whne the custodian told me a plane crashed into the Twin Towers, I thought that was the oddest thing to interrupt my class. It wasn't until my break that I realized the significance of the whole thing. I quickly told my best friend and colleague...then called both my grown children and pleaded with them to come home...each was about 90 minutes away. Only my daughter placated me...my son thought I was not being reasonable and did not humor me. Then again, I tried to get my mom to leave her home which was two hours from me. She was right across the river. SHe refused even though she was very afraid. SHe said it reminded her of the bombing in her childhood home of Germany during WWII. I needed to see that the world was still turning, that life in the USA was still "existing." I had never seen such tragic events in my lifetime. I was stunned, numb, devestated beyond words as all people were. How could people be so cruel? What is the mentality of people that can hurt other innocent people for absolutely no reason at all other than to "curse" America? How do we move forward? Now my husband is in the Middle East fighting for the cause, and frankly, I'm not sure that anyone can change the mentality of the people that have been living with these belief systems for thousands of years. I'm still fearful and angry and scared.

I just kept the kids busy as I continued to find out everything I could about what had happened and was going on. That night I attended a prayer vigil at a neighboring church. 9/9/2009 16:34:19WorkOtherCo-WorkerVerbal ChatI was teaching second grade on 9/11/2001 in a school not far from New York City. Our school principal always watched the morning news in her office which is how she heard the news. She sent the librarian or school secretary to each room to cover while each of the faculty took a turn first hearing the news from her and then viewing the news. We did not tell the K-5 students but our principal did have a conversation with the 6-8 students and asked them not to discuss it in the hallways or on the bus. We let the parents talk to the K-5. We are a Catholic school so we prayed the next day and for many after. Many families had NYC connections. My brother-in-law was in New York City on business within walking distance of the Twin Towers and our family didn't hear that he was safe for hours. No transportation was available for him to come home for two days.

I also remember going outside for recess...no one told us not to. The sky was a beautiful blue and it was so quiet. I live by O'Hare airport and there were no planes flying...strangely quiet. I also was thinking of all the people in New York and how much their lives had changed in an instant as well as ours.

.

9/9/2009 16:42:52OtherTelevisionSpouse/Significant OtherOtherMy husband was at a training session in Pennsylvania, and I accompanied him for a few days away at a hotel. He needed me to pick up a few items at Walmart, so I went there early in the morning while he attended his session. I saw the planes hit on the TVs in the electronics dept. of Walmart. The next thing I knew, the cashiers were leaving because school was being dismissed early. It was all very surreal. My husband's training session was cancelled, and then we had to try to make our way home because we are from NY. On the way home, we discussed that we would probably know someone touched by this tragedy. Unfortunately, this proved to be true. My best friend since 1st grade lost her brother in the attack. He was on the 105th floor of the WTC. He called his wife to tell her that he wasn't going to make it, and that he loved her and their son. So sad.

.

9/9/2009 16:42:59WorkTelevisionCo-WorkerVerbal ChatOur librarian first saw it on TV. We had only 24 people on staff but our little bldg. in So. Milw. had a son in law at the Pentagon, and 3 others in the city.
My brother lives in NYC and bought his condo because it was only a mile from the Towers which he could see right out his window. My other brother had a meeting on one of the top floors of the Towers that day. (We later learned he missed his flight.) I immediately called them, there was no answer. Then the lines were jammed. Finally my parents received calls from each of them. My brother who lives in NYC had actually been on plane that left right before the fatal plane boarded. He struggled as the city went through this. He had to walk past the armory where names and pix were posted. He also passed a fire station that lost many members. He lost friends and family members of friends that day. One of his friends lost her husband. He was an off duty fire fighter but went in as soon as he heard the news. They found his inscribed wedding ring in the rubble on Easter Sunday of the next yr. They never found his body. My brother will never be the same and neither will the city. If you visit the site even today, people stand in silence. No signs ask this but people remember how horrible this was for our country. We should never forget!

9/9/2009 17:36:50WorkCo-WorkerCo-WorkerVerbal ChatI was only a few days into my new fourth-grade teaching position but was already aware that I had twin students whose father was an airline pilot. Although it was extremely difficult I refused to "let on" that there anything going on and kept teaching until we could assure the girls that their dad was okay. At the same time I was terrified because my nephew, Rob, worked near the WTC. Phone service was almost nonexistent in and out of NYC because circuits could not handle the massive volume of calls that were being placed. About noon I found out that Rob was okay but in the same conversation I discovered that another nephew, Brian, (Rob's brother) was in NYC on bank business and had been staying at a hotel across the street from the WTC. No one had heard from him! After several more hours of worry my family was relieved to find out late that afternoon that Brian was also okay.

I will never forget the depth of my fear that day, of not knowing or understanding what was happening that day. I won't forget the silent but very real tears that I, and so many others cried. I won't forget the disbelief that this tragedy could even happen! Everyone was glued to their tv's for any bit of news they could latch on to. I remember watching tv and listening to the mournful symphony of the rescue personnel's locator alarms. I then remember how my sadness was compounded when the loss of so many firefighters and policemen was announced. The pictures and interviews on tv ripped at your heart. The skies were strangely quiet because flights were grounded. Churches were open and people flocked to them. As I finish this up, I also think that it's important to remember the tremendous and heartwarming outpour of compassion and love that occurred that day and in the following weeks and months from around the world.

We run drills for such events overseas that include gas masks. We were scared for ourselves, and cut off from contact with others in the United States which made near panic set in. It was evening when we heard the news. By 7am we were on a bus being sent on base for what resulted in a 3 week lock-down of sorts. A lot of weeping and prayers followed. (we did have to stay in from recess at the end of the previous year from that) All the teachers were very confused. One of the teachers on our team went up to the office and asked what was really going on. Before they had gone up to ask I had gotten on-line to see if there really was smoke coming up from Mexico and it said that the second tower had fallen on the main page and I couldn't get anything else except for the picture and the headline from the website. I was confused, I knew they were talking about The World Trade Center. But it did not even register that, one of them could have fallen. 9/9/2009 19:55:49OtherOtherSpouse/Significant OtherPhoneI was at a workshop, so I guess I was at work but not in class. When the presenter began his introduction, someone's phone rang and the woman who answered it screamed something unintelligible at the time. The workshop was in a very large room, and there were probably over 100 people in attendance. After a few minutes everybody's phone started buzzing and going off. The initial impression was that NY had been attacked. We all went out into the hallway where there was a television and we saw that the the Second Tower had been hit. We were all in shock. I don't remember much about my workshop, but it was a full day mandatory training and the presenter gave us the option of going back to our schools or staying on. Everyone stayed, but I imagine that none of us were really focused on anything that was presented at that workshop. Later, when I went back to my campus, the principal had suspended all after school activities and ordered everyone in the building to go home to be with their families. My husband and I were glued to the television set that evening, our phone never stopped ringing.

9/9/2009 20:20:14HomeOtherSpouse/Significant OtherPhoneMy mom called me at home because she feared that my brother was in the first tower. He worked in an office on one of the upper floors in the north tower and always arrived by 8:00 am. We waited for information all day, a phone call, an email, but nothing came. We began to think the unthinkable. At 7:30 pm, my mother received a phone call from Australia. The caller was a friend of my brother. He let us know my brother was safe but that he couldn't call anyone on the east coast. My brother had overslept that morning and was on the 9:00 train into Manhattan and never did make it into the city.I grew up in New York and, unforunately, lost two friends from high school that day. One was a firefighter and father of 4 young children. The other was a financial analyst and just a really good guy. 911 will always be a very sad day for me.

9/9/2009 21:37:30HomeOtherOtherOtherI was just about to start college and so I was still living at home. My mom burst into my bedroom and woke me up to tell me.
I don't remember who I shared the news with. Since I slept in, most people already knew by the time I talked to them.
I just remember feeling like I wished there was something I could do to help. I didn't really know what to think about it. I was a little bit scared too. One of my friends lives in New York City and she walked 5 miles to donate blood that day. She heard the whole thing while she was getting ready for school.

9/9/2009 21:40:09OtherOtherCo-WorkerVerbal ChatI was with my class at the Kansas State Fair - in lines at the Grandstand, waiting for our turns to ride in semi trucks around the Grandstand. One of the truckers stopped driving and said that America was being bombed by terrorists, and that bombs on airplanes had hit something in NYC. I thought it was a tasteless joke and remember being appalled that he would make up something like that in front of my class. After I realized that he wasn't joking, I tried to call home. I don't know if it was because of the volume of phone calls or simply my location in the Fairgrounds, but I couldn't get any reception on my cell phone. My coworkers and I gathered the kiddos up and called the school. We ended up heading back to school much earlier than planned and watching the news together at school. I was so nervous until I reached my parents, who were watching my new baby.

.

9/9/2009 21:52:24WorkCo-WorkerCo-WorkerVerbal ChatI was in the copy room making copies during my break/4th grade specials/recess. My colleague, Bonnie, was in her classroom next door. She had turned on the TV (a NEW thing to have in each room that year) during her planning time to see the live news discussion and to call me in. We called out to the other teachers on the hall to join us, and witnessed the second impact. My co-teacher that next 4th grade math class wanted to keep it on after the kids returned for math class. I told her no-way, go to the lounge, I'd get class that day. Surreal day teaching regular math without any discussion with the kids. Found out later that day that one of my students' fathers had left that morning for New York on business. Never so glad to have waited and maintained normalcy in all my life.

Remember how absolutely GORGEOUS a crisp, clear, blue September day it was. Called my parents to make sure that my brother in law had made it safely to his sales trip that day, knowing they would have already called my sister. There was an unquenchable need to check in with each other. I remember telling my mother that I now viscerally understood her stories of Pearl Harbor and being crystal clear that I would always remember where I was and how I heard.

Our school held a memorial program that year and each year thereafter until all the kids old enough to remember that day had gone...little by little it changed from a remembrance of a shared moment to a teaching of history to elementary students with no personal memories or connections to that day.

Our school art teacher had the idea to make gloves. A local hardware store donated a case of work gloves. Our students decorated them with markers. Our Assistant principal went to NY on a vacation trip each October. That year she took the gloves and donated them (after some calling/planning) to the sanitation department. The head of the department was astounded and grateful to have his crews remembered. Most of the accolades and attention went at first to the fireman and policemen -- and rightfully so as first responders. They forged a link. The next year, she returned to see how they were doing. His men had refused to wear the gloves as they worked to sort the wreckage and debris as it came into their station, but held onto to their gloves. Some were framed and hung on the wall of the main entry/office.

That story had our school realizing how the unsung everyday heroes in our town were often taken for granted. We started making cards. The next year students were chosen to accompany our assistant principal to deliver them to the Sanitation Department, Sheriff's office, County Public Works office, Town Police Department, and med flight helicopter base. The police chief was so taken aback, that he came right to the school and asked to thank the kids on the PA system that very afternoon.

My saddest thoughts today are to remember what we did then, and to think how quickly we've forgotten not to take it all for granted still.

9/9/2009 22:34:22HomeTelevisionSpouse/Significant OtherVerbal ChatI was in shock. I knew two planes had crashed into the world trade center but was still in complete disbelief when it looked bent over. I guess I thought it was invincible as were we. I had to explain to my kindergarteners that NYC was very far away and that they were not in any danger. I took them out to the school yard and we walked across the large US map, from CA. were we live to NYC. I had a student in my class from Afganistan. I was worried about his families safety. Everything turned out fine. I will never forget that day.

I called my father to tease him, because he was indirectly involved in the incident during or just after WW2 when a plane hit the Empire State Building. My sister was at their mid town office and my sister in law had arrived at her office when the attack took place. It was several hours before we could locate my brother Joe but he was on the street when it happened and then walked up to 79th street to our brother James apartment. We have friends who did lost loved ones who were firefighters and went into the towers to save lives.

My memory was and is a scary one. The teachers were called together at lunch time by the principal. She said that we were not to say anything to the children in our classes. The principal did not want to deal with "the crying and the upset that might happen".
The children did know something was up; parents were coming for no apparent reason to pick up some of their classmates. They wanted to know why, and I could not answer them truthfully. I felt very bad that they could not come to me and get the truth. I found it scary that we were not trusted to be truthful and loving to the students we cared for by someone
