What is Coffee of the Year?
Coffee of the Year (COTY) is a competition designed to recognize exceptional coffees from around the world. In an effort to include the most number of entries for the 2010 competition there have been some significant changes to the coffee evaluation protocols, submission policies and nomination process. Coffees will be eligible for multiple awards and there is no need to apply separately for each award category.
Roasters, Importers, Exporters and Farmers may nominate coffees for submission and pay the fees for coffees entered into the competition. Roasters, Importers and Exporters may facilitate/pay for sample shipment and assist with the application process. Roasters, exporters and importers WILL NOT receive awards for their nominations or logistical assistance. The fee for entry is $25 per sample.
There will be two vetting rounds based on where the coffee is coming from, (Southern or Northern Hemisphere) and then a final round comparing the best of the best. Each evaluation session will be comprised of four cupping teams assembled throughout the United States. These teams will consist of SCAA Cupping Judges, Certified Q Graders and approved cupping experts with a minimum of 5 years cupping experience among a wide range of coffee origins. Each evaluation session will follow Q Grading Guidelines and must receive a score of no less than 84 pts. to be considered to move on to the next round. Evaluations will take place ahead of SCAA Expo and results will remain confidential until they are announced during 2010 SCAA Annual Exposition and Symposium in Anaheim, California.
The award categories have been expanded to include varietals, region, processing style and best of show. A people’s choice award will be given; this award will be decided at Expo.
Winning coffees will be recognized at the farmer or producer group level (if multiple farmers contribute to the submission.) Awards will be presented to designated representatives on behalf of the producers. The winners of this competition will be showcased in the Coffee of the Year Competition area located near registration.
