We, the undersigned members of the University of Chicago community, are extremely concerned about the lighting levels and lighting quality on campus. We believe that the current campus lighting and the Administration’s recent lighting installations detract from campus safety, waste enormous amounts of energy, and create excessive light pollution. We hereby urge the University to abandon its current lighting plans and to formulate and adopt a new lighting strategy that does the following: - Increases campus safety by lighting areas evenly and avoiding glare - Avoids wasting energy on excessively high wattage and useless illumination - Prevents light pollution by using properly-shielded lights that point toward the ground instead of up into the sky or outward into people’s eyes.
