The Governor has proposed cutting school funding by $4.8 billion by the end of the 2008-2009 school year. This would mean:
- A reduction in spending per student by $800. (States like New York already spend 50% more per student than California.) - California ranks 46th in education funding. With these cuts, California would move to 50th. - The cuts are equivalent to laying off more than 237,000 teachers and non-classified staff (janitors, food service workers, bus drivers and maintenance workers). - The cuts are equivalent to increasing class size by 35% (a class of 29 students would increase to 40 students).
Governor Schwarzenegger, please fully fund our schools this year and reform school funding to guarantee our schools will receive sufficient, stable funding every year to deliver a high quality education to all students.
California is the world's seventh largest economy. What's stopping the Governor from prioritizing education funding?
Your e-Postcard will be printed out and delivered to the Governor's office on May 15, when students rally at the Capitol.
