Dear Gretchen, Steve, and Jim, I the undersigned believe that private companies should not profit off of basic University services. Since buying textbooks is a necessary component of a college education, the University Book Center should be a non-profit enterprise. I encourage the University as part of its negotiation of the bookstore contract to implement a non-profit model starting the semester of Fall 2009. A non-profit would allow students to get some books cheaper and keep more of the money that students pay for textbooks in the local economy. If the Administration and the Stamp opt to continue using a for-profit model for the bookstore, I will do my textbook shopping elsewhere.
