Entrepreneurial Opportunities for Youth in the IT Sector

Growth in Pakistan's IT sector has continued even during the challenging economic situation that the world has faced the past few years. The size of the ICT sector is estimated at US$ 2 billion, with growth in double digits each year. Interestingly, the average age of IT companies in the country is anywhere from 1 - 8 years and most companies are owned by entrepreneurs in the 25 - 40 age group. According to estimates, Pakistan currently has about 103 million young people in the 20 - 35 year age bracket. Pakistani universities are producing thousands of IT and business graduates every year. However, despite better start-up opportunities in the IT Sector, after completing their studies, 95% of students focus their efforts on looking for a job and do not explore entrepreneurship as a career. The Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT and IT Enabled Services (P@SHA), and Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) a non-profit affiliate of the US Chamber of Commerce have initiated a stakeholders' dialogue entitled "Entrepreneurial Opportunities for Youth in the IT Sector". The objective of this initiative is to look at the impediments/entry barriers for young entrepreneurs in the IT sector and to determine whether there are any legal/regulatory reforms that are needed to improve entrepreneurial opportunities. P@SHA and CIPE will bring together a group of: 1. Young IT entrepreneurs 2. Young graduates who have recently passed out and are still on the search for a lucrative career option and those who will shortly be exiting from university and entering the job market.
