Goal: Advance university goals with regards to Inclusive Excellence
· Educate the college community on the value, definition and goals of “Inclusive Excellence”
o Dean Benson presented on this at the CLS Fall Meeting for all faculty and staff. The Dean, Associate Dean and SAC Director met with individual departments throughout the year to discuss this further.
· Work with departments and units on developing, implementing and assessing plans for Inclusive Excellence that will involve all faculty and staff at some level of involvement
o The Dean, Associate Dean, and SAC Director met with individual departments to discuss their plans. Department and college activities will be posted on the Inclusive Excellence Web-site and include many new departmental activities such as the reading group meetings on Hmong culture and heritage in the History Department.
· Work with departments and units on developing, implementing and assessing plans for Inclusive Excellence that will focus on a) retention of diverse students and b) retention of diverse faculty and staff
o The CLS Dean, Associate Dean and SAC Director met with individual departments to discuss their plans.
o Dean Benson and Associate Dean Martin-Stanley participated as members of the Inclusive Excellence Committee to develop strategies for IE goals.
· Develop and implement college-wide plans for Inclusive Excellence
o Develop and implement an Inclusive Excellence Workshop for all CLS faculty & staff at the January CLS meeting – “Working with Diversity”
§ Associate Dean Martin-Stanley wrote a UW-System Grant that enabled us to bring Dr. Cynthia Kernahan, Psychology and Ethnic Studies Professor at UW-River Falls, and Dr. Nancy Chick, English Professor at UW-Barron County, to give a workshop presentation.
o Support existing and new Inclusive Excellence initiatives in the college
§ The School of Arts & Communication sponsored a special inclusive excellence classroom session with multi-cultural speaker Vanessa Roberts on her perspectives on race, ethnicity and class. (October 2009)
§ Visiting Scholars/Artists of Color Events
· The Department of Theatre Arts (Beth Cherne) received a grant to support a visit by White Earth Naishinabe Nation playwright, poet and freelance writer Marcie Rendon. (April 2010)
· The ESL Institute (Janis Hanson) received a grant to support a visit by Navajo storyteller Sunny Dooley, Dine who worked with UW-L international students to share life stories. (February 2010)
· The Institute for Latina/o and Latin American Studies (Victor Macias-Gonzalez) received grants to support the visits of immigration activist Enrique Morones, Puerto Rican artist, printmaker, poet, and arts entrepreneur Tanya Torres, and social documentary director and producer Salvador Valdez. These individuals, along with Rosa Valle Centeno, President of the Association for the Development of El Salvador, presented as part of the UW-L Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
· The Department of English (Matt Cashion) received a grant to support the visit by poet Amuad Jamaul Johnson. (November 2009)
· The Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies (Mahruq Kahn) received a grant to support the lecture by film maker Parvez Sharma on “Islam & Diversity.” (February 25, 2010)
§ Departmental Programs (included, but were not limited to)
· English Colloquium Series
o English Professor William Barillas presented on “LGBTQ Literature of the Midwest.” (November 6, 2009)
· Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop Series
o Psychology Professor Ryan McKelly presented on “Too Big, or Not Too Big? This is the Question: Exploring Modern Media’s Influence on Male Body Image.” (November 18, 2009)
§ The new Eagle Mentoring Program (EMP), which is designed to promote institutional change to foster access and excellence for historically underrepresented populations
· Director Victor Macias Gonzalez received a 2009-2010 Closing the Achievement Gap Grant from UW-System. Provost Enz-Finken and the College of Liberal Studies are providing grant matching funds of $29,287 ($14,000 and $15,287 respectively) to support this two-year program.
· Director Victor Macias Gonzalez worked with CLS faculty mentors to coordinate this pilot program for 10 students in their Sophomore Year. The first cohort included seven female and three male students. Six self-identified as Hispanic, two as Hmong, one as Native American, and one as African American.
· Students were matched to a faculty mentor in their major, who they meet with on a regular basis to discuss academic, career, extra-curricular and personal concerns. Mentors and protégés employed a EMP Program Checklist that focused on five basic areas designed to provide guidance to Sophomore students (study skills and learning strategies, career preparation, community involvement, personal growth and exploration, etc. Every month, students met with the EMP director to discuss areas of the checklist they had been working on. Every two weeks the students attend a series of workshops presented by UW-L faculty and staff designed to address student concerns.
· In November students participated in a fieldtrip to Chicago, with tours and activities at the University of Chicago, the Chicago Art Institute, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Du Sable Museum of African American History.
· A year-end recognition dinner was held at Dean Benson’s home for program participants.
· Three basic protocols of assessment whose focus is to measure protégé development and their utilization of EMP, UW-L, and community resources are being administered throughout the program. Elise M. Larose from the University of Chicago is serving as the outside evaluator.
· At the conclusion of the program, seven students were accepted for the McNair Program in Fall 2010, three have summer internships, two are traveling abroad and nine of the ten students have registered for the Fall 2010 semester.
o Charge the CLS Diversity Committee to make recommendations for new college initiatives focused on the retention of diverse students and faculty
§ The CLS Diversity Committee made recommendations for new college initiatives focused on the retention of diverse students and faculty. The CLS Deans Office will be considering these recommendations for implementation in 10-11.
§ The CLS Public Relations Committee made a recommendation that this committee evolve into a new CLS Recruitment and Retention Committee.
· Provide support for Inclusive Excellence events and activities
o Promotion of events on the CLS web-site
§ All CLS Inclusive Excellence events were publicized on the CLS web-site, in the CLS e-newsletter and in CLS emails to faculty and staff.
o Providing financial support, as possible
§ The CLS Deans Office provided financial support towards the following IE activities:

· Eagle Mentoring Program Director (Macias-Gonzalez) travel support to attend the Institute on Sophomore Success Conference
· Institute for Latino/a and Latin American Studies Director (Macias-Gonzalez) travel support for diversity research
· Registration fees for 18 CLS faculty/staff ($4,028) and 17 students $2,312) to attend the national White Privilege Conference held in La Crosse in April 2010. Dean Benson, Associate Dean Martin-Stanley, and SAC Director Smith also attended the White Privilege
· “Project Girl” exhibit in the University Art Gallery, that looks at media’s messages about females (May-October 2010)
· The CLS Deans Office provided quarter-time replacement funds for the new Director of The Research Center for Cultural Diversity & Community Renewal (CDCR) Robert Haworth in the Department of Educational Studies. The Center seeks to be a unique place that brings together students, faculty, and community members across the state with the mission of promoting social justice through education.
