In '04 or '05 Chrysler redesigned the oil pump drive assembly (OPDA). Recently, a number of people on JF have been noticing uneven wear on the gear. Sometimes this manifests as "howling monkey syndrome." As of September '10 there is no definite answer to the problem though several things have been suggested that will improve the situation.

.

.

Suggestions

.

Move to an oil with an ACAE A3 rating and/or having high ZDDP levels.

.

If damaged, replace the current OPDA or use the Chrysler repair kit.

.

Replace the OPDA drive gear with one from Crown Auto. (May require redriling the shaft.)

.

Replace the factory oil pump with the Hesco unit which specifically targets the cam/OPDA gears.

.

Insert a zerk fitting into the OPDA to allow greasing the upper bushing.

.

.

Recommendations for Oil

.

It looks like high levels of ZDDP are required, prefereably ACEA A3 rated. It's in the middle of the circle on the back. 99% of the bottles might say ACEA A-4 or A-5 or will have no ACEA spec.

Does not include the gasket. O'Reily and AutoZone will have it but ask for a 2000 TJ. Ask for Chrysler part number J3181288 (?). It's a flat, fiber, round gasket that fits around the base of the assembly.

Consider a ZDDP additive when changing the oil.http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/chrysler-paying-install-new-cam-2005-2006-owners-should-read-963235/index56.html#post10230047

If you don't like running "Additives" in your oil you can buy 10W-40 and SAE 30 SL rated oil for $6.00 a quart from summit racing. It has 1800PPM of ZDDP in it. Its made by Spectro Oils and it and all of Spectros oils are highly recommend by the hot rod guys and the vintage car guys.http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/chrysler-paying-install-new-cam-2005-2006-owners-should-read-963235-post10236498/#post10236498
