2/18/2008 19:27:00Brian Hinklebghinkle@gmail.combhinklealumniIf the University is really interested in addressing the issue of lighting and its role in personal safety, they ought to put down the checkbook for new accent lighting and work with Hyde Park aldermen to change streetlight bulbs across the neighborhood. I've lost count of the times I've walked to or from campus at night and the street is completely dark aside from moonlight - if the mugger comes from the S. University Ave side when the bulbs are burn out, it doesn't matter how well the quad buildings are lit!

2/18/2008 19:47:00Andrew Coneacone@uchicago.eduaconealumniThe new lighting system was clearly not designed by a competent professional. It creates a glare that makes it difficult to see much of anything at night.

What is needed is a system of mellow, near-ground lights, not glowing orbs so powerful that pedestrians can't see each other and astronomers can't see the stars. The thoughtlessness of the current arrangement surrenders science, sustainability, and safety to an oppressively generalized fear.

Our government already encourages such cowardice. I don't want my alma mater to follow suit.

As a contributor to the petition, I know intimately some of the details of our complaints, and feel that if they are not heeded, then the University is making a very poor decision, not only concerning the safety of the students, but also by wasting enormous amounts of electricity, enormous amounts of electricity, and detracting from the true beauty (even at night!) of our gothic campus.

2/19/2008Igor Serebryanyigor47@moomers.orgigor47alumniPlease, this is common sense! Light pollution is wasteful, unattractive and, in the case of the new quad lighting, kind of painful. 2/20/2008 13:28:00Maritza Mallekmaritzam@uchicago.edumaritzamstudentI have read the full petition and am so glad that the astro club was able to take the time and effort to put it together. I am a fourth-year and I have been frustrated with the wastefulness of the lighting scheme on campus since I arrived in 2004. I sincerely hope the University recognizes this petition and resolves to make significant changes regarding lighting and electricity use in the future.

2/20/2008 18:33:00Dr. Andrew Puckettpuck2017@gmail.compuckalumniI'm a recent alum of the Astronomy Department, and a former user of the Ryerson Observatory. While I haven't seen the new "well-washer" lights myself, the issues of glare, over-lighting, and uplighting were certainly a problem while I was around. In 2002, I made a survey of campus lighting to highlight the potential financial savings (http://astro.uchicago.edu/~puck/lights/survey.html). Unfortunately, my PhD research took up too much of my time to pursue the issue further. I'm glad that the RAS has picked up the gauntlet again! Every corrected fixture helps reduce Chicago's pink skyglow. The University can be an example to the community of safe, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally-friendly lighting practices, while saving tens of thousands of dollars to boot.

.

2/20/2008 18:33:00Erik Lokensgardehlokens@uchicago.eduehlokensstudentI agree that a reasonable, energy efficient, system is needed which reduces glare.
Light can be just as blinding if not distributed correctly, thus reduction in lighting does not imply reduction in safety. Contrarily, it may mean increased safety, as noted in the petition.
Furthermore, I would like to be able to use the Ryerson facilities more often and more effectively.

2/27/2008 17:35:47Stephen Floodsflood@uchicago.edusfloodalumniI have had trouble taking anything the university administration says seriously ever since the "turn off dormitory lights" campaign was immediately followed by the installation of powerful and unnecessary lights which are left on all night long. If the university were to admit that they had made a poor decision, and redo the campus lighting, that greatly improve my respect for the university, and make me much more comfortable about making donations to the university. As things stand, the administration often appears to say one thing, then do another.

3/5/2008 17:08:54Robert Friedmanrfriedman@uchicago.edurbfstudentAn absolutely negligent move on the part of the University administration. The UofC is supposed to be a global leader in academics, intellectualism and innovation yet adopts an outdated and degenerate lighting strategy? From an institution that supposedly champions "the life of the mind", a truly brainless move. Bravo RAS for picking up the slack!

I live 30 miles away in suburban Palatine and the skyglow from Chicago completely washes out any stars in the southwestern sky. Please do all you can to reduce light pollution. It saves money and is green at the same time. Everyone wins.

10/16/2009 13:03:24Elizabeth Perkinsemperkins@uchicago.eduemperkinsstudentWhen humans cannot see the stars, let alone the rest of the amazing things that can be seen in the night sky, we forget about the incredible universe we are apart of. We are suspended in some seemingly random corner of the universe, on this beautiful planet, and we're rotating; as we rotate, we see the rest of the universe around us, as best as our human eyes will let us. It's awe-inspiring. Humans are so involved with their own personal lives, that they forget to take a moment to look up and appreciate this incredible 'thing' we are a part of. When you throw light pollution into the picture, humans absolutely become disconnected from this reality, and an institution like the University of Chicago should be acknowledging this!

I am a Portuguese student, this is a very serious matter, Universities should give the best examples! The same problem happens in Oporto University in Portugal where I study, people are starting to think about the consequences of bad lighting to us and the environment, with LED technology being cheaper there's the right time to make thing better, I hope we can have better harmony and start to understand our acts consequences. Best Greetings!
